Troubleshooting

Indexed by what you notice, not by what the subsystem is called. When something is wrong you know there's no sound — you don't yet know it's a routing problem.

11 of the 17 entries below are not faults. They are documented behaviour that looks like one — marked by design so you can stop looking. “Your unit is fine” is a useful answer and nobody publishes it.

It won't boot, or it hangs on the splash screen

Firmware or settings in a bad state

Hold footswitches A and H during the first six seconds of the splash screen to reach Recovery Mode. Choose Reset Settings first — it keeps your presets and captures. Only use Factory Reset, which wipes everything, if Reset Settings doesn't clear it.

Quad Cortex Wiki: FAQ
Something plugged in is holding it up

Disconnect every cable except power, wait 30 seconds, then try again. Neural recommend this before a factory reset.

It won't let me add a block, but the CPU meter is barely used

Usually a second reverb.

You have hit a per-path limit, not the CPU ceilingBy design

Move the block to the other path. Rows 1 and 2 are one pair, rows 3 and 4 are the other, and the reverb limit is enforced per pair — with spring reverbs excepted.

Forum: the limit of gears
Bypassed blocks are still costing youBy design

Bypassing does not reduce CPU consumption. Delete what you are not using rather than switching it off.

The Grid and the DSP budget

My Global EQ works on some presets and not others

Those presets are over the processing budgetBy design

Global EQ and the Input Gate are automatically disabled when a preset exceeds available resources, without an error. Delete a block from the affected preset.

I plugged a cable in and I/O Settings didn't light up

That jack has no connection sensingBy design

OUT 1/L, OUT 2/R and CAPTURE OUT do not sense connections. They will never change colour. Nothing is wrong.

Quad Cortex Wiki: FAQ

The output is much quieter than it should be

TS cable on a quarter-inch outputBy design

OUT 3/L and OUT 4/R are balanced. A TS cable halves the output voltage — you need 6 dB back to reach unity.

Quad Cortex Wiki: Gain Staging
Volume knob is not maxed while you set levels

Set the knob to maximum, get the levels right on the Grid and in I/O Settings, then trim the knob for the room. Otherwise the meters do not describe what leaves the jacks.

Quad Cortex Wiki: Gain Staging

Gain staging, start to finish

It's clipping and I can't find where

Input stage too hot for your pickups

Swipe down → I/O Settings → the input. Play a little harder than usual. The meter should just tickle the red. If it buries it, pull IN 1 LEVEL down.

Quad Cortex Wiki: Setting the Input Level
Not enough headroom on a clean patch

Leave 12 dB of headroom on clean tones and 6 dB on distorted ones. Clean patches peak much higher than they feel.

Quad Cortex Wiki: Gain Staging
Input and Output blocks are telling you and you haven't looked

Both flash red when clipping. That is the meter — find which one is flashing and fix that stage.

There's an audible gap when I change sounds

You are changing presets where scenes would doBy design

Presets reload the whole rig; scenes recall settings inside a rig that is already loaded and switch instantly. Build the parts of one song as scenes A–H inside a single preset.

It sounds thin or hollow through my real amp

An amp block is still in the preset

Two amps in series causes phase problems. Remove the amp block when you are running into a real amp.

Quad Cortex Wiki: Using the Quad Cortex with a Real Amp
A cab block is still in the preset

Turn on Global Bypass — it disables every cab, IR and capture block across all presets at once, rather than making you edit each one and undo it later.

My pedal in the FX loop distorts or sounds wrong

The send is running at line levelBy design

Sends are line level at unity by default. Pedals expect instrument level — pull the send down, starting around −5 dB.

Quad Cortex Wiki: FAQ

My IR doesn't sound like it does in my DAW

It was resampled and truncated on uploadBy design

Every IR is converted to 48 kHz and resized to 1,024 samples — about 21 ms. A long IR with a real tail does not survive that. Nothing you can do on the unit changes it.

Quad Cortex Wiki: FAQ

Cortex Cloud won't connect, or drops constantly

Weak signal

You need −60 dBm or better. Move the router, move the unit, or use a phone hotspot with “Maximize Compatibility” enabled.

Quad Cortex Wiki: FAQ
Network configuration

Use 2.4 GHz or mixed mode, split mixed bands into separate SSIDs, avoid special characters in the network name, assign the unit a static IP, and prioritise its traffic in QoS.

Cortex Control can't see my unit

Missing USB Audio Driver on Windows

Windows needs Neural's USB Audio Driver installed separately. macOS does not.

Cortex Control (Quad Cortex only)
Wrong cable

The Quad Cortex uses USB Type B — the square printer connector. A USB-C cable from a Nano Cortex will not fit.

Gridleak: read off the unit · Cortex Control (Quad Cortex only)
Firmware behind the app

Cortex Control expects the latest CorOS. Since 4.0.0 the two share a version number, so mismatches are easy to spot.

My captures come out at the wrong level or feel wrong to play

INST LEVEL and IN LEVEL confused

INST LEVEL sets how hard the captured device is driven and does not affect the capture. IN LEVEL is the return signal and is the level that matters. Wrong volume means IN LEVEL; wrong feel means INST LEVEL.

Quad Cortex Wiki: Capture Techniques
Both left at 0 dB for an amp capture

Use about −12 dB for clean amps and −6 dB for distorted ones. 0 dB on both leaves no headroom.

Quad Cortex Wiki: Capture Techniques
Auto-set used on a pedal

Auto-set gives inconsistent results on pedals. Set both levels to 0 dB by hand so the capture matches the pedal.

Making captures

My wah works on one preset and not the others

Expression assignments are per-presetBy design

There is no global expression assignment — every preset that needs the pedal has to have it assigned. Build it into your template preset before you make copies.

I can't delete a splitter or mixer

Rows 2 and 4 always carry themBy design

They cannot be fully removed. Drag the S icon fully left and the M icon fully right, then exit to Grid view and delete the empty split rows.
