Get great tones out of your Nano Cortex tonight.
The cheat sheet and the tutorial, in one place. Every control explained, the signal chain demystified, and the mistakes that make it sound bad.
Five things that explain almost every problem
Nearly every recurring complaint about this pedal traces back to one of these. No other guide states them together, so they go first.
- 01
There are no amp models. Only captures.
You don’t dial an amp — you pick a snapshot of one amp at one set of knob positions. GAIN, BASS, MID and TREBLE are a generic tone layer bolted on afterwards, not the captured amp’s tone stack. This is the least documented thing about the device and the source of the most disappointment.
- 02
The footswitches rotate.
They’re rotary encoders you can also step on. Turning the left one scrolls captures; turning the right one scrolls cabs. Nothing else on the pedal works this way and it’s invisible in every photo of it.
- 03
Cab sim on, or cab sim off. Get this wrong and it sounds broken.
The IR Loader is a speaker simulation. On for headphones, monitors and front-of-house. Off for anything that ends in a real guitar speaker. Stacking it on top of a capture that already contains a mic’d cab is the single most common cause of “why is this so boxed in”.
- 04
The phone is half the instrument.
There’s no screen. Six knobs get you playing, but choosing which effect loads into a slot, editing anything deeper, finding and installing captures, renaming presets and changing settings are all Cortex Cloud app jobs. There is no desktop editor.
- 05
Only four of the sixty-four presets are under your feet.
Two footswitches, two presets each. The other sixty exist but need a MIDI controller to reach. Plan a setlist around four sounds, or budget for a foot controller before your first gig.
Learn it once, then look it up forever
Same facts, two different jobs. Read the Learn track start to finish on day one; keep the Reference track open on a music stand after that.
The tools that answer what people keep asking
Control map
Click any knob, button or footswitch for every tap, hold and turn it does.
Signal chain
All eight blocks, what’s fixed, and exactly which devices are legal where.
Rig setup wizard
Say what you’re plugging into. Get the cab-sim state, routing and levels.
Tone recipes
Concrete starting points by tone target, each labelled with its provenance.
Installing captures
The obtuse bit, made prescriptive. Every step, and every way it goes wrong.
Cortex Cloud app
Finding captures, installing them, and everything the pedal can’t do alone.
Troubleshooting
Symptom, cause, fix — for the problems that make it sound broken.
Every claim carries its source
This guide was assembled from Neural DSP’s manual, FAQ, getting-started articles and firmware release notes, plus dealer spec sheets, professional reviews, and their community forum. Facts are labelled by where they came from.
Cross-checking that many sources catches what a single owner wouldn’t. Where they disagree — and on this device Neural DSP’s own documentation contradicts itself in several places — the disagreement is shown rather than quietly resolved. Where nobody has published something, it’s marked unverified rather than filled in with a plausible-sounding number.
