What it actually is
Captures, not models. Why that changes how you approach every sound.
A capture is a photograph of one amp at one setting. You choose photographs; you don’t adjust the amp.
It has no amp models
This is the single most important thing to understand, and almost nothing tells you plainly. The Nano Cortex does not contain amp models. Its “amp” block holds a Neural Capture — a machine-learned snapshot of a real amplifier at one specific set of knob positions.
That distinction sounds academic until you try to use it. On a modeller, you pick an amp and then dial it in. Here, the dialling-in already happened, permanently, before the capture existed. Your job is choosing the right snapshot.
Neural DSP have been explicit that this is architectural rather than a gap to be filled later. They have officially ruled out running their plugins on this device, because the difference between Neural Capture and plugin amp modelling — combined with the fixed signal chain — prevents it.
Practical consequence: a capture taken clean will never break up the way the real amp would. The dynamic transition from clean to crunch isn’t in the snapshot. If you want edge-of-breakup, you need a capture that was taken at the edge.

GAIN, BASS, MID and TREBLE are a generic tone layer sitting after the capture. They are not a model of the captured amp’s tone stack, so they won’t react the way that amp’s controls do — turning up MID on a capture of a Marshall does not behave like turning up MID on a Marshall.
Neural DSP has never published their centre frequencies or unity positions, and owners have asked for that documentation directly. So you are learning a three-band EQ by ear, with no reference. That’s frustrating, and it’s worth knowing it’s the device rather than you.
GAIN is the exception worth understanding properly: it sets how hard your signal drives the capture. Turning it down genuinely cleans most captures up. It just can’t re-voice the preamp.
Where your tone actually comes from
Given the above, the leverage is not where beginners look for it. In rough order of impact:
- 01Which capture you choose. This is most of your tone, and it’s a browsing problem rather than a knob-twiddling one.
- 02The IR Loader — cabinet, microphone, position, and the low- and high-cut. More tonal range lives here than in the three tone knobs.
- 03GAIN, for how hard you push the capture.
- 04The overdrive or EQ device you put in a pre slot.
- 05BASS, MID and TREBLE, last.
What it is very good at
None of this is a criticism. The trade Neural DSP made buys you something specific: on-device capturing in about five minutes, with no computer and no internet, at a resolution officially identical to the Quad Cortex. Captures move freely between the two devices.
It also means the sound of your own amp — the actual one, in your room, with your cabinet and your microphone placement — can live in a box the size of two stompboxes. That’s the point of the device, and it’s worth doing early.
